- What the P0730 code means: The Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a discrepancy between the engine speed, transmission input speed, and transmission output speed, indicating the transmission is not achieving the correct gear ratio for the commanded gear.
- Severity: Severe. This issue can lead to significant transmission damage and should be addressed immediately. Continuing to drive can worsen the problem and lead to complete transmission failure.
- Most common cause: Low transmission fluid level or contaminated transmission fluid.
What the P0730 code means
The P0730 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) officially stands for "Incorrect Gear Ratio." In simpler terms, your vehicle's Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has determined that the transmission is not operating within the expected gear ratio for the gear it's currently commanded to be in. The TCM monitors various sensors, including the input shaft speed sensor and output shaft speed sensor, to calculate the actual gear ratio. When this calculated ratio deviates significantly from the desired ratio for a prolonged period (typically a few seconds), the P0730 code is set.
This discrepancy indicates that power is not being transferred effectively through the transmission, suggesting a problem with the internal workings of the transmission, its hydraulics, or its control system.
Common symptoms
- Check Engine Light (MIL) illumination: This is almost always the first sign.
- Transmission slipping: The engine revs up without a corresponding increase in vehicle speed.
- Hard shifts or erratic shifting: The transmission may shift harshly, unpredictably, or refuse to shift at all.
- Delayed engagement: A noticeable delay when shifting into drive or reverse.
- Loss of power or poor acceleration: The vehicle may struggle to accelerate or feel sluggish.
