Why would a diesel truck derate?
Derate is a deliberate power or speed reduction commanded by the engine control module when it detects a condition that could damage the engine or break emissions rules.
Common trigger categories
Emissions system faults (DEF level or quality, SCR efficiency, DPF loading), cooling or oil-pressure protection, sensor faults, and some fuel system faults. The exact logic is set by each engine maker.
What to note before calling
Active warning lights, the fault codes shown, DEF level, recent regeneration messages, what the truck was doing when it happened, location, and unit number. This helps a shop or roadside provider bring the right tools.
Safety
If oil pressure or temperature warnings appear, stop safely. Driving on can cause major engine damage.
Common questions
- Can clearing codes fix a derate?
- Clearing codes without fixing the cause usually brings the derate back and can hide useful information. Diagnose first.
