EV Powertrain Overview: Battery, Inverter, Motor, Charging

EV powertrains are simpler than ICE but high-voltage. Knowing the components is mandatory for any shop that touches them.

    The real problem

EV service isn't more dangerous than ICE if you respect HV safety. It is more dangerous if you don't.

    By the numbers

    Typical pack voltage
    350–900V
    Avg pack capacity (mainstream)
    60–100 kWh
    Service interval
12–24 months (most just tires + brakes + coolant)

    The 4 main components

HV battery pack (cells + BMS + cooling), inverter (DC↔AC), motor (usually AC permanent-magnet or induction), single-speed reduction gear.

    Service expectations

Tires + brakes + cabin filter + 12V battery + coolant (for battery + motor systems). HV components are largely sealed; service is rare but expensive when needed.

    HV safety

Class 0 gloves rated to 1000V, isolation tester, MSD removal + wait time per OEM, never use ICE shop tools on HV components. OEM-specific training required.

    Frequently asked questions

Do EVs need brake fluid service?

Yes — regenerative braking means the friction brakes work less, but moisture absorption in DOT fluid still requires service every 2–3 years.
