CSA Scores Explained: How BASICs Work and How to Lower Them

CSA scores drive insurance, audit risk, and shipper reputation. They're also widely misunderstood.

    The real problem

Carriers can't 'pay off' CSA scores. The only fix is the underlying behavior — and it takes time.

    By the numbers

    12–18 mo

    The 7 BASICs

Unsafe Driving, HOS Compliance, Driver Fitness, Controlled Substances/Alcohol, Vehicle Maintenance, Hazmat, Crash Indicator. Scored 0–100; higher = worse.

    What moves a score

Roadside inspections (clean inspections lower scores; violations raise them, weighted by severity), crashes (any crash hits Crash Indicator), and time (events age out at 24 months).

    Lowering scores

Three durable plays: pre-trip inspection rigor (fewer roadside violations), driver coaching (fewer unsafe driving and HOS), and clean-inspection chasing (more clean inspections dilute the violation history).

    Frequently asked questions

How long does a violation stay on CSA?

24 months, weighted higher in months 1–6 and decaying thereafter.

Can shippers see my CSA score?

Yes — the public portal shows percentile ranks per BASIC. Shippers and brokers screen on it for risk.
