Winter Trucking Prep: 18-Point Checklist for Cold-Weather Reliability

Cold-weather diesel problems are 90% preventable. The fleets that don't break down in December prep in October.

    The real problem

Most cold-start failures are batteries + fuel gelling. Both have a 4-week prep window.

    By the numbers

Diesel cloud point varies by blend
    0°F to -15°F
    DEF freezes at
    12°F
    Battery cranking loss at 0°F
    ~40%

    The 18-point prep

Batteries load-tested, terminals clean, glow plugs/grid heater function, block heater + cord, winter-blend or anti-gel additive, fuel filter changed, air dryer + tank drains, DEF heater function, coolant freeze point tested, antifreeze concentration, hose + belt inspection, tire condition + chains carried where required, wiper fluid (de-icer), defroster function, mirror heat, emergency kit (blankets, food, water).

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need anti-gel additive if I buy winter blend?

Often no — most truck-stop winter blend is treated. But verify cloud point against your operating area; in extreme cold (Northern Plains), anti-gel is cheap insurance.
