As a locksmith and ASE-certified electrical technician, I get a lot of questions about modern GM smart keys. The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox uses a push-to-start proximity key system. While it seems heavily computerized, General Motors has graciously included an on-board programming procedure that allows owners to add a new key fob at home—saving you a costly trip to the dealership.

Here is your comprehensive guide to the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox key fob, from battery replacements to step-by-step programming.

    Step-by-step on-board programming

If you live in the US and currently have one recognized key fob, you can program a new one yourself. (Note: Canadian regulations require two working fobs, or a scan tool must be used). The 2018 Equinox uses a specific pocket in the center console for programming.

How to Add a Key Fob (With 1 Working Fob):

    1. Ensure the vehicle is off.
    2. Place your recognized (working) key fob in the vehicle's cupholder.
    3. Insert the emergency physical key from the recognized fob into the key lock cylinder on the outside of the driver’s door.
    4. Turn the key in the door lock to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. The Driver Information Center (DIC) on your dashboard will display "Ready to Learn Electronic Key."
    5. Place the new, unprogrammed key fob into the front storage area/transmitter pocket located inside the center console (under the armrest).
    6. Press the START/STOP ignition button once.
    7. The DIC will display that the new key has been learned.
    8. Press the START/STOP button again to exit programming mode.
    9. Remove the new key fob and press the Lock/Unlock buttons to verify it works.

Note: If you have lost all your keys, GM has a 30-minute "All Keys Lost" DIY procedure involving the door cylinder, but because you cannot cut the emergency key blade yourself, you will still need a locksmith or dealer to cut the emergency blade first.

    Battery replacement

When your DIC displays a low battery warning or your range decreases, it's time to replace the battery. The 2018 Equinox fob takes a standard CR2032 coin-cell battery.

    1. Press the small chrome button on the side or bottom of the fob to release and pull out the emergency key blade.
    2. Look inside the cavity where the blade was stored. You will see a small slot.
    3. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the slot and gently pry the two halves of the fob apart.
    4. Remove the old CR2032 battery.
    5. Insert the new CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing down toward the back cover.
    6. Snap the two halves of the plastic shell back together firmly.

Where to buy a replacement fob

When you need a new remote, you have a few avenues, each with pros and cons:

    • Dealership: Buying OEM direct from Chevy guarantees compatibility and durability. However, this is the most expensive route, often costing $150–$250 for the fob alone, plus $100+ if they insist on programming it for you.
    • Automotive Locksmith: A mobile locksmith can supply an OEM or high-quality aftermarket fob, laser cut the emergency blade on-site, and program it. This usually costs between $150–$200 all-in.
    • Amazon / Online Retailers: Buying online is the cheapest route (often $30–$60 for aftermarket fobs). The con? Quality control is hit-or-miss, and you still have to pay a professional to laser cut the emergency key blade.

    If on-board programming isn't supported

If you live in Canada (where adding a key requires two working remotes), or if your vehicle’s onboard programming fails, you will need professional equipment. Modern Equinox fobs use advanced encrypted immobilizer transponders.

When the on-board procedure doesn't work, an automotive locksmith or dealer must connect a bidirectional scan tool to your Equinox's OBD-II port. The technician will bypass the security gateway, clear the old keys from the module, and pair the new remotes directly to the vehicle's Body Control Module (BCM). Expect to pay a locksmith around $75–$120 for the programming and cutting service if you provide your own fob.
