    Quick reference

    FastenerTorque (ft-lb / Nm)Notes
    Wheel lug nuts (8-lug, SRW & DRW)140 ft-lb / 190 NmTighten in a star/cross pattern; recheck after 50–100 miles.
Engine oil drain plug — 6.0L gas (L96)18 ft-lb / 25 NmNew gasket if equipped; do not over-tighten.
    Engine oil drain plug — 6.6L Duramax (LML)30–31 ft-lb / 40–42 NmAluminum pan; verify plug/gasket type.
    Transmission drain plug — 6L90 (gas)15–20 ft-lb / 20–27 NmIf pan is serviced, pan bolts typically 8–12 ft-lb (11–16 Nm).
    Transmission drain plug — Allison 1000 (diesel)~25 ft-lb / ~34 NmDo not over-tighten; aluminum threads.
Front brake caliper bracket bolts170–221 ft-lb / 230–300 NmVaries by brake package; use threadlocker only if specified.
    Rear brake caliper bracket bolts129–148 ft-lb / 175–200 NmVaries by axle/brake package.
Caliper slide/guide pin bolts (front/rear)26–33 ft-lb / 35–45 NmClean pins; light high-temp silicone grease on pin bodies/boots only.
Front axle/hub nut (4x4)177–188 ft-lb / 240–255 Nm2WD may not use a front axle nut. Always stake/replace nut if required.
Rear axle retaining hardware (full-float)Procedure-specificUses spindle/locknut system; follow OEM procedure, not a single torque.
Spark plugs — 6.0L gas (14 mm, taper seat)13–18 ft-lb / 18–25 NmInstall dry unless plug maker specifies; crush washer types differ.
    Glow plugs — 6.6L Duramax~11 ft-lb / 15 NmGentle torque; fragile M8 threads.
Valve cover bolts — gas 6.0L7–9 ft-lb / 9–12 NmEvenly in sequence; do not overtighten.
Valve cover bolts — Duramax upper cover7–9 ft-lb / 9–12 NmLower cover hardware may differ; verify in OEM manual.
Intake manifold bolts — gas 6.0L7–9 ft-lb / 9–12 NmTorque in OEM sequence, 2-pass method.
    Intake/plenum fasteners — Duramax18–25 ft-lb / 24–34 Nm (typical)Value varies by component (Y-bridge, runners); confirm per RPO.

    Wheel lug torque pattern

Use a star/cross pattern on all 8-lug wheels:

    • Hand-start all lug nuts, seat the wheel, then snug in a star sequence.
    • Final torque to 140 ft-lb (190 Nm) in two passes using the same star pattern.
    • For dual rear wheels (DRW), torque the inner and outer wheels in sequence; recheck torque after 50–100 miles of driving or after severe braking/temperature cycles.

    Brake torque notes

    • Caliper bracket bolts: These are high-torque fasteners on HD trucks. Clean the threads in the knuckle/bracket, inspect bolts for stretch or corrosion, and replace if questionable. GM typically does not require threadlocker unless noted in the service information; if specified, use a medium-strength (blue) threadlocker and allow proper cure time.
    • Caliper slide/guide pins: Remove rust and old grease from pins and bores. Use a high-temperature silicone or glycol-compatible brake lubricant on the pin bodies and boots only. Do not grease pad friction surfaces or rotor faces. Torque slide pins to 26–33 ft-lb (35–45 Nm) while ensuring the pin bushings are properly seated and not twisted.
    • Rotor retention: If the rotor uses retaining clips from the factory, remove and discard during service; they are for assembly line use only and can affect torque accuracy.

    Why torque matters

Correct torque keeps clamp load within the engineered window:

    • Wheel fasteners: Too loose risks wheel movement and stud fatigue; too tight can stretch studs and distort rotors/drums. Using the star pattern helps center the wheel and rotor hat, reducing brake pulsation.
    • Engine and drivetrain plugs: Drain plugs thread into aluminum pans on many trims; excessive torque can strip threads or crack pans. Under-torque can lead to leaks.
    • Brake hardware: Bracket bolts carry braking loads; accurate torque prevents loosening and maintains caliper alignment. Slide pins need just enough torque to hold without binding.
    • Ignition/glow plugs: Over-torque can crack insulators (gas) or seize in the head (diesel). Under-torque can cause combustion leakage or misfires.
    • Gaskets and covers: Valve covers and intake manifolds seal with low torque. Over-tightening warps covers and squeezes out gaskets, causing leaks.

Disclaimer: Specifications above reflect common values for the 2016 Silverado 3500HD across gas (6.0L) and diesel (6.6L Duramax) trims and brake packages. Some fasteners vary by RPO code, axle, wheelbase, or aftermarket component. For any critical fastener, verify the exact specification and sequence in the GM factory service manual for your VIN.
