    Engine Oil

For the 2025 model year, Chevrolet specifies different engine oils depending on the powerplant. It is critical to use the correct oil to ensure longevity and proper operation of the engine's complex systems, like Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) and variable valve timing.

    • 5.3L V8 (L84) & 6.2L V8 (L87): These gasoline engines require a full synthetic SAE 0W-20 oil that meets the GM dexos1 Gen 3 specification. The latest generation of dexos1 is formulated to provide superior protection against oxidation, deposits, and LSPI (Low-Speed Pre-Ignition), a phenomenon common in modern direct-injection turbocharged engines.

    • 3.0L Duramax I6 (LZ0): The diesel engine has its own unique requirement: SAE 0W-20 that meets the GM dexosD specification. Do not confuse this with dexos1 or dexos2. DexosD oils are specifically formulated for the lubrication needs and emissions systems of light-duty diesel engines. Using the wrong oil can lead to premature wear and damage to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Intervals: While the Silverado is equipped with an Oil Life Monitoring System (OLMS), a best practice is to change the oil and filter every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, or at least once a year, regardless of mileage. Always use a high-quality oil filter.

    Engine Coolant

The 2025 Silverado 1500 uses ACDelco DEX-COOL Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant. This is an orange-colored Organic Acid Technology (OAT) coolant.

Critical Note: Never mix DEX-COOL with other coolant types, such as traditional green IAT (Inorganic Acid Technology) or hybrid HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) coolants found in other vehicles. Mixing coolant chemistries can cause them to gel, leading to clogged coolant passages, overheating, and catastrophic engine damage. If you need to top off the system, use only DEX-COOL pre-mixed 50/50 with deionized water or a compatible OAT coolant.

Intervals: DEX-COOL is an extended-life formula, typically rated for 5 years or 150,000 miles. However, it's wise to test the coolant's strength and pH annually after the third year.

    Transmission Fluid

All 2025 Silverado 1500s equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission (10L80) require a very specific fluid: ACDelco DEXRON ULV (Ultra-Low Viscosity).

Common Pitfall: Do not use older DEXRON III, DEXRON VI, or any "universal" transmission fluid. The 10L80 is a highly sophisticated transmission with extremely tight tolerances. It was designed from the ground up to use this specific ultra-low viscosity fluid. Using the wrong fluid will lead to poor shifting, increased wear, and eventual transmission failure.

Intervals: GM recommends a fluid and filter change at 45,000 miles for severe service (towing, heavy hauling, etc.) and does not specify an interval for normal service. A good rule of thumb is to perform this service every 60,000 miles to ensure a long service life.

    Driveline Fluids (4WD/AWD)

Transfer Case: Four-wheel-drive models require ACDelco DEXRON VI (6) Automatic Transmission Fluid. Note that this is different from the ULV fluid used in the main transmission. Capacity is typically around 1.5 quarts, but always fill to the bottom edge of the fill plug hole.

Front Differential: The front axle specifies SAE 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil.

Rear Differential: The rear axle also uses SAE 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil. Some rear differentials, particularly those with a locking mechanism, may have different requirements. It is always best to verify with the OEM service information for your specific configuration.

Intervals: A common interval for changing differential and transfer case fluids is between 30,000 and 60,000 miles, especially if you tow or use 4WD frequently.

    Brake Fluid

Chevrolet specifies DOT 3 brake fluid for the 2025 Silverado. While DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 fluids have higher boiling points and are technically compatible, it is best to stick with the manufacturer's recommendation unless you are performing a complete system flush for a specific performance application. Never use DOT 5 silicone-based fluid, as it is incompatible with the system's seals.

Intervals: Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air over time. This moisture lowers the boiling point and can cause corrosion. A full brake fluid flush is recommended every 2-3 years, regardless of mileage.

    Power Steering Fluid

The 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 uses an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. As such, there is no hydraulic power steering pump, reservoir, or fluid to service.

    Washer Fluid

Use any quality, name-brand windshield washer fluid. A good all-season mix rated for -30°F or lower is recommended to prevent freezing in the winter months.

    Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

For models equipped with the 3.0L Duramax diesel engine, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is required. The fluid must be certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and meet the ISO 22241 standard. This will be clearly marked on the bottle.

Pitfalls: DEF has a limited shelf life (about one year) and can be degraded by sunlight and high temperatures. Always use fresh, properly stored DEF. Using contaminated or old DEF can damage the expensive Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.
