Battery TypeTypically CR1616 (some variants may use CR2032). Verify by opening your fob.
    Programmable On-Board?Remote lock/unlock/panic: Yes (DIY). Immobilizer/transponder: No — requires dealer/locksmith scan tool.
Cuts Required?Yes. Sidewinder (laser) cut of the key blade to your vehicle.

    Step-by-step on-board programming

Good news: You can program the remote functions (lock/unlock/panic) for a 2015 Honda Pilot on-board without a scan tool. This does NOT program the immobilizer chip needed to start the engine — that part requires a dealer or locksmith.

Do this with all doors closed and have every remote you want to work present (new and existing). Programming will erase any remote not learned during the session.

    1. Enter the vehicle and close all doors. Ensure the hood is closed.
    2. Insert a working metal key into the ignition.
    3. Turn the key to ON (II) — dash lights on, engine off.
    4. Within 5 seconds, press the LOCK button on the remote you’re programming.
    5. Turn the key to OFF.
    6. Repeat steps 3–5 three more times (total of 4 cycles ON → press LOCK → OFF). Do the ON→LOCK→OFF cycle briskly (about once per second).
    7. After the 4th ON and LOCK press, the door locks should cycle (lock then unlock) to indicate the vehicle has entered programming mode.
    8. Within 5 seconds, press LOCK again on the same remote to store it. Locks will cycle to confirm.
    9. To add additional remotes, press LOCK on each additional remote within 10 seconds of the previous confirmation; the locks will cycle after each one.
    10. Turn the key to OFF and remove it to exit programming mode. Test all remotes for lock/unlock and panic.

    Notes:

    • If locks do not cycle on step 7, restart from step 1 and try slightly faster key cycles.
    • This procedure only teaches remote buttons. The transponder chip inside the key head still needs professional programming in order for the engine to start.

    Battery replacement

Most 2015 Pilot remote-head keys use a CR1616 coin cell, though some variants use CR2032. Check yours before buying a battery.

    1. Remove the key blade if applicable and locate the seam on the fob shell.
    2. Using a small Phillips or a coin/flat screwdriver (depending on shell style), gently pry or unscrew the case. Work slowly to avoid cracking tabs.
    3. Note battery orientation (polarity). Take a photo if helpful.
    4. Slide the old coin cell out. Avoid touching the new battery faces with bare fingers.
    5. Install the new battery with the same polarity. Ensure the rubber gasket (if present) is seated.
    6. Reassemble the shell until all clips snap or screws are snug. Test LOCK/UNLOCK.

Tip: Weak-range or intermittent operation is often fixed by a fresh battery and cleaning the battery contacts with isopropyl alcohol.

Where to buy a replacement fob

    • Honda dealer

      • Pros: Guaranteed-correct OEM part number by VIN; cutting and immobilizer programming on-site; warranty support.
      • Cons: Highest price. Typical parts + programming for a remote-head key: $220–$420 total depending on region.
    • Automotive locksmith

      • Pros: Mobile service available; lower cost than dealer; can cut sidewinder keys and program immobilizer and remotes; can clone or add keys.
      • Cons: Quality varies—choose a reputable, insured locksmith.
      • Typical totals: $150–$300 for aftermarket remote-head key supplied, cut, and fully programmed. OEM part usually adds $40–$100.
    • Online (Amazon/eBay/parts sites)

      • Pros: Lowest parts cost; you can DIY the remote programming and battery.
      • Cons: You still need blade cutting and immobilizer programming; many returns stem from mismatched FCC IDs. Buy only when the listing explicitly matches your FCC ID and year/make/model.
      • Typical parts pricing: $20–$60 for aftermarket remote-head key; $90–$170 for new OEM.

    If on-board programming isn't supported

For the 2015 Pilot, only the remote button functions are DIY. The immobilizer transponder inside the key requires a scan tool and security access. Expect:

    • Transponder type: Commonly Honda’s crypto transponder (often referred to as ID46/PCF7936 in this generation). Always verify by VIN/FCC ID before ordering chips or shells.
    • What the pro does: Cut the sidewinder blade, retrieve/authorize immobilizer through Honda diagnostics (HDS) or a professional key programmer, and register the new key. If all keys are lost, an all-keys-lost procedure adds time and cost.
    • Cost expectations: $100–$180 for cutting + immobilizer programming labor when you bring your own compatible key; $150–$300 total if the locksmith supplies an aftermarket remote-head key; higher if OEM or all keys are lost.

    Bring to appointment:

    • Your vehicle, proof of ownership, photo ID, and any existing working keys/remotes.
    • A replacement key that exactly matches the original FCC ID and blade profile if you purchased online.
