How to change the oil

2. Drain the oil: Place a large catch pan (minimum 16-quart capacity for the 5.2L) under the drain plug. Remove the plug and allow it to drain completely.
3. Replace the filter: Locate the spin-on oil filter. For the diesel, it's mounted on the passenger side of the engine block. Remove it with a filter wrench, lubricate the new filter's rubber gasket with clean oil, and hand-tighten it snugly (usually 3/4 to 1 full turn after gasket contact).
4. Reinstall drain plug: Clean the drain plug, fit a new crush washer, and torque to the spec listed above.
5. Refill and check: Fill the engine with the appropriate amount of oil through the valve cover fill cap. Start the engine, let it idle for 30 seconds to build oil pressure, and check for leaks. Turn it off, wait five minutes, and verify the oil level on the dipstick.

Common issues / tips

• DPF System Health (Diesels): For the 3.0L and 5.2L diesels, you must use low-ash CJ-4 or CK-4 oil. High-ash oils will permanently clog the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), leading to severe derates, forced regens, and replacement bills exceeding $3,000.
• Checking the Dipstick: The Isuzu diesel engines take a long time for oil to drain back into the pan. If you check the oil immediately after shutting the engine off, it will read artificially low. Wait at least 5-10 minutes.
• Gas Engine Filter: The 6.0L GM-sourced V8 uses standard GM filters (like the AC Delco PF48E or PF63E depending on the exact housing clearance on your upfit). Verify clearance before purchasing.
