As an ASE-certified master technician, I’ve diagnosed my fair share of electrical gremlins on the redesigned second-generation GMC Acadia. Before you start replacing expensive components like the fuel pump or infotainment system, checking the fuses should always be your first step.

Below is a comprehensive guide to the fuse box locations, amperage ratings, and circuit diagrams for the 2017 GMC Acadia. Keep in mind that exact configurations can vary slightly depending on your engine (2.5L 4-cylinder vs. 3.6L V6) and trim level (SLE, SLT, Denali). Always verify with the printed legend on the inside of your fuse box lid.

    Quick Answer: Fuse Box Locations

The 2017 GMC Acadia has two primary fuse boxes:

    1. Engine Compartment Fuse Block: Located under the hood on the driver’s side, near the battery and air intake.
    2. Instrument Panel Fuse Block: Located inside the cabin. To access it, look under the instrument panel on the driver’s side, behind a trim cover.

    Engine Compartment Fuse Block

The under-hood fuse box protects major high-current systems like the engine control module (ECM), ABS, cooling fans, and exterior lighting.

    Under-Hood Relays

The engine compartment fuse block also houses several micro and mini relays. Key relays include:

    • Relay 51: Starter Motor Relay
    • Relay 53: A/C Compressor Clutch Relay
    • Relay 55: Fuel Pump Relay
    • Relay 58: Powertrain/Ignition Main Relay

    Instrument Panel Fuse Block

The interior fuse box protects cabin features, including the infotainment system, power windows, interior lighting, and 12V power outlets (cigar lighters).

    How to Test a Fuse

Before ripping apart your dashboard, here is how you properly test a fuse on your Acadia:

    1. Visual Inspection: Pull the suspected fuse using a fuse puller (usually located in the engine compartment fuse block). Hold it up to the light. If the metal filament inside the U-shape is broken or scorched, the fuse is blown.
    2. Use a Multimeter: If the visual check is inconclusive, set your digital multimeter to the continuity setting (the one that beeps). Touch a probe to each exposed metal tab on the top of the fuse while it is still plugged in. If you hear a beep, the fuse is good. No beep means the circuit is open (blown).
    3. Use a Test Light: Ground the clip of a 12V test light to a solid, bare metal chassis ground. With the key in the "ON" position, probe both little metal dots on top of the fuse. The light should illuminate on both sides. If it only lights up on one side, the fuse has blown.

Never replace a fuse with one of a higher amperage. Doing so bypasses the safety limits of the circuit and can easily lead to melted wires or a vehicle fire.

Common Blown Fuses on this Vehicle

In my time working on the 2017 Acadia, a few specific circuits tend to pop fuses more frequently than others:

    • 12V Outlets (Cigar Lighters - F5/F6): By far the most common. Kids plugging in faulty phone chargers or high-draw devices like tire inflators into the center console or cargo area will pop these 20A yellow fuses instantly. Check your accessory's plug before replacing the fuse.
    • Radio/Infotainment (F3): The GMC IntelliLink system can occasionally glitch or freeze. Sometimes, a software lock-up will blow the 15A radio fuse, or you may need to pull this fuse intentionally to "hard reset" the screen.
    • Trailer Lighting/Brakes (Under-hood F28): If you utilize the Acadia's towing package, poorly wired rental trailers can short out the trailer brake and lighting fuses. Always inspect the trailer's 7-pin or 4-pin connector for corrosion or exposed wires if this fuse blows.
    • Blower Motor (Under-hood F25): If your A/C or heater stops blowing air, check this 40A J-Case fuse. However, if this fuse keeps blowing, you likely have a failing blower motor drawing too much current, or a burnt-out blower motor resistor.

Electrical problems can be incredibly frustrating. If you've replaced a blown fuse and it immediately pops again when you turn the key, you have a dead short in the wiring or a failed component. At that point, it’s time to call in the pros.

Before you pull a fuse on the 2017 GMC Acadia

    • Use the label printed on the panel cover or the owner's manual for your exact build. Layouts change with options, model year and build date, so a chart for another truck can be wrong.
    • Replace a blown fuse only with the same amp rating. A larger fuse can let wiring overheat.
    • A fuse that blows again right away means a short or failing component downstream. Find the cause before replacing it again.
    • A good fuse doesn't prove the circuit works — relays, grounds and connectors fail too.
    • Disconnect the battery before working near high-current fuses or cables.
