As an ASE-certified master technician, I know that tracking down an electrical issue can be frustrating. Whether your radio suddenly stopped working, your 12V power outlet is dead, or your Equinox won't crank, the first and easiest thing to check is always the fuse box.

Below is a comprehensive guide to the fuse box locations, diagrams, and amperage ratings for the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox.

Note: Automotive manufacturers often change fuse layouts based on trim level, engine size (2.4L vs 3.6L), and optional equipment. Always verify the fuse number and amperage with the printed legend on the inside of your fuse box lid.

    Quick answer

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox has two main fuse boxes:

    1. Engine Compartment Fuse Block: Located under the hood on the driver's side, near the battery.
    2. Instrument Panel Fuse Block: Located inside the cabin, on the passenger side of the center console, behind a removable plastic access panel.

    Engine Compartment Fuse Block

The under-hood fuse block houses the high-amperage fuses, main relays, and fuses protecting critical engine and exterior lighting components. To access it, open the hood and locate the black plastic cover near the battery. Unclip the tabs to lift the cover.

Below is a table of the most critical and commonly searched fuses and relays in the engine compartment.

    Instrument Panel Fuse Block

The interior fuse box is responsible for most of the cabin accessories, infotainment, and occupant safety systems. You will find it on the passenger side, low on the center console. Pull the plastic cover off to expose the fuses.

    How to test a fuse

Testing a fuse is a straightforward process that takes only a few seconds if you have the right tools.

    1. Visual Inspection: Pull the suspected fuse using the plastic fuse puller located inside the engine compartment fuse box lid (or a pair of needle-nose pliers). Look at the U-shaped metal wire inside the colored plastic. If the wire is broken or has a black burn mark, the fuse is blown and needs replacement.
    2. Using a Multimeter: Set your digital multimeter to continuity mode (the setting that beeps when you touch the probes together). Touch one probe to each exposed metal tab on the top of the fuse while it is still plugged in. If the multimeter beeps, the fuse is good. If it is silent, the fuse is blown.
    3. Using a Test Light: Connect the ground clip of a 12V test light to a bare metal ground on the vehicle. Turn the ignition on (engine off). Touch the probe to the small metal test points on top of the fuse. If the light illuminates on both sides, the fuse is good. If it lights up on only one side, the fuse is blown.

Pro Tip: Always replace a blown fuse with a new one of the exact same amperage and color. Installing a higher-amperage fuse can cause wires to melt or start an electrical fire!

Common blown fuses on this vehicle

Based on my experience in the shop, here are the most common electrical issues and blown fuses we see on the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox:

    • 12V Power Outlets / Cigar Lighter (Interior Fuses #6 and #7): This is by far the most common blown fuse. It usually happens when a cheap phone charger shorts out, or when a high-draw device (like a tire inflator) is plugged in. Check your accessories before putting a new 20A fuse in.
    • Fuel Pump (Under-hood Fuse #11): If your Equinox cranks strong but refuses to start, check the 20A fuel pump fuse. If this fuse blows repeatedly, the fuel pump is likely drawing too much amperage and is on its way out.
    • Blower Motor (Under-hood Fuse #35): If your A/C and heater fan completely stops working on all speeds, check this 40A J-Case fuse. A failing blower motor can cause excessive electrical resistance, blowing the fuse to protect the circuit.
    • Radio/Infotainment (Interior Fuses #1 and #4): If the MyLink screen goes black or freezes, sometimes pulling these fuses for 60 seconds and reinstalling them acts as a hard reset for the system.

If you keep blowing fuses, you have a short circuit that requires professional diagnosis.

Before you pull a fuse on the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox

    • Use the label printed on the panel cover or the owner's manual for your exact build. Layouts change with options, model year and build date, so a chart for another truck can be wrong.
    • Replace a blown fuse only with the same amp rating. A larger fuse can let wiring overheat.
    • A fuse that blows again right away means a short or failing component downstream. Find the cause before replacing it again.
    • A good fuse doesn't prove the circuit works — relays, grounds and connectors fail too.
    • Disconnect the battery before working near high-current fuses or cables.
