As an ASE-certified electrical technician and professional locksmith, I’ve worked on countless Ford PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) configurations. The 2020 Ford Ranger is a fantastic midsize truck, but when it comes to keys, Ford relies on a highly secure immobilizer system. Whether you have the standard flip key (switchblade) or the push-to-start Smart Key, adding a new fob is straightforward—but only if you already meet Ford’s strict security prerequisites.
Here is your comprehensive guide to getting a new fob cut, programmed, and ready for the road.

Step-by-step on-board programming
Ford allows DIY on-board programming for the 2020 Ranger, but there is a major catch: You must already have TWO working, programmed keys. If you only have one key, or you’ve lost all your keys, DIY on-board programming is completely disabled by the vehicle’s security system. You will need a professional (see the section below).
If you do have two working keys and a newly cut, unprogrammed third key, follow these steps.
For standard Flip Keys (Turn-to-start):
- Insert the first programmed working key into the ignition.
- Turn the ignition to the "ON" position (do not start the engine) and wait 3 seconds.
- Turn the ignition back to "OFF" and remove the first key.
- Within 10 seconds, insert your second programmed working key into the ignition.
- Turn it to the "ON" position for 3 seconds, then turn it "OFF" and remove it.
- Within 10 seconds, insert your new, unprogrammed key into the ignition and turn it to "ON".
- Keep it in the "ON" position for about 6 seconds. The door locks will cycle, or the security light on the dash will illuminate and then turn off, indicating successful programming.
- Turn the ignition off, remove the key, and test the remote and start functions.
For Smart Keys (Push-to-start): (Note: You will need to locate the backup key slot, typically located at the bottom of the center console storage bin or under the cup holder mat).
- Place the first working smart key in the backup slot.
- Press the Start/Stop button once (do NOT press the brake pedal). Wait 5 seconds, then press it again to turn it off.
- Remove the first key. Within 10 seconds, place the second working smart key in the backup slot.
- Press the Start/Stop button once (no brake). Wait 5 seconds, then press again to turn off. Remove the second key.
- Within 10 seconds, place the new, unprogrammed smart key into the slot.
- Press the Start/Stop button. The hazard lights will flash, and the doors will lock/unlock, confirming the new key is programmed.
Battery replacement
If your current remote is just suffering from poor range, you likely only need a new battery. Both the flip key and the smart key take a standard CR2032 battery.
- Flip Key: Pry off the back battery cover using a small flathead screwdriver in the notch near the key ring loop.
- Smart Key: Remove the emergency mechanical key blade. Look for the small slot inside the cavity, insert a flathead screwdriver or a coin, and gently twist to split the fob casing in half.
- Remove the old battery and insert the new CR2032 with the positive (+) side facing up.
- Snap the two halves of the fob shell back together firmly.
Where to buy a replacement fob
Choosing where to source your key dictates the quality and total cost of the replacement.
- The Dealer: The most reliable but most expensive option. You’ll get an authentic Ford Motorcraft fob. Pros: Guaranteed to work, high quality. Cons: Can cost between $250 and $400 for the part and programming.
- A Professional Locksmith: The best middle ground. Automotive locksmiths stock high-quality aftermarket or refurbished OEM fobs (like Strattec). Pros: Usually 30-50% cheaper than the dealer, and they come to you. Ballpark price: $150 to $250 cut and programmed.
- Amazon / eBay: The cheapest option. You can buy unbranded shells and electronics. Pros: Extremely cheap ($20–$50). Cons: You still need to pay someone to laser-cut the HU101 blade ($30-$50). Additionally, many generic electronics fail to program or die after a few months.
If on-board programming isn't supported
If you only have one key, or your keys are entirely lost, the vehicle's PATS immobilizer will not accept a new key without a diagnostic command. The 2020 Ford Ranger uses an advanced transponder system that requires authorized access to the vehicle’s OBD-II port.
A locksmith or dealer must connect a specialized scan tool, bypass the security gateway, and command the Body Control Module (BCM) to enter learning mode. This typically adds $75 to $150 in labor/diagnostic fees on top of the cost of the key and the cutting service. Don't waste time trying DIY sequences if you don't have two keys—it physically cannot work without the computer override.
