As an ASE-certified electrical technician and locksmith, I see a lot of modern trucks roll into the shop with key and fob issues. The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 is a fantastic, reliable workhorse, but its anti-theft and keyless entry systems are highly advanced. Depending on whether your truck is equipped with a standard turn-key ignition or a push-to-start system, the process for replacing and programming a key fob will vary wildly.
Here is everything you need to know about replacing, programming, and maintaining the key fob for your 2017 GMC Sierra 1500.

Step-by-step on-board programming
If your 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 has a standard turn-key ignition, you cannot program a new fob or transponder key yourself. General Motors removed the on-board programming procedure for standard ignitions in this generation to increase security. You will need to take the truck to a locksmith or dealer who has an OBD2 scan tool (like the GM GDS2 system or an Autel/SmartPro programmer).
However, if you have a Push-to-Start (Smart Key) system and you currently have at least one recognized, working key fob, you can program a new one using the following on-board procedure:
- Prepare the vehicle: Ensure the truck is off. Take your working smart key, your unprogrammed smart key, and step inside the vehicle. Close all doors.
- Access the emergency slot: Open the center console storage bin. Remove the rubber mat at the bottom. You will see a small key fob pocket/transmitter pocket.
- Place the working key: Put the already programmed key into the cup holder (out of the pocket).
- Initiate programming mode: Insert the physical emergency key blade (from the working fob) into the driver's side exterior door lock cylinder. Turn the key to the unlock position five (5) times within 10 seconds.
- Watch the Driver Information Center (DIC): The dashboard screen should display a message saying "Ready for Remote #2" (or #3, #4, depending on how many are programmed).
- Insert the new key: Place the unprogrammed smart key into the center console transmitter pocket.
- Program: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When the key is learned, the DIC will indicate that it is ready for the next remote.
- Finish: Press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode. Test the new remote's lock/unlock and start functions.
Battery replacement
When the remote range drops or the dash says "Replace Battery In Remote Key," it is time for a new CR2032 battery.
- Press the chrome button on the fob to deploy the flip key (or remove the emergency key from the bottom of the smart key).
- Look inside the cavity where the key was resting. You will see a small notch separating the two halves of the plastic shell.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver into the notch and gently pry the remote apart.
- Remove the old CR2032 battery.
- Insert the new CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing down toward the back cover.
- Snap the two halves of the shell firmly back together.
Where to buy a replacement fob
The Dealership: This is the most straightforward but expensive route. You are guaranteed an OEM remote (like PN 13577770) that matches your VIN perfectly. Expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $350 for the fob, the HU100 laser cut, and the programming fee. An Automotive Locksmith: A great middle ground. Locksmiths carry OEM and high-quality aftermarket (Strattec) keys. They can laser-cut the blade on-site and program the immobilizer transponder for typically 20-30% less than the dealership. Amazon / Online Retailers: You can buy a cheap aftermarket fob online for $20 to $50. However, the quality of the circuit boards can be hit-or-miss, and you still have to pay a locksmith to cut the high-security blade and program it. Some locksmiths will refuse to program customer-supplied keys because they cannot warranty the electronics.
If on-board programming isn't supported
If you have the standard ignition or have lost all your working smart keys, your Sierra's anti-theft system enters a lockdown state that requires professional equipment to bypass. The immobilizer transponder must sync with the truck's Body Control Module (BCM).
A mobile locksmith can come directly to your driveway, connect a diagnostic tablet to your OBD2 port, clear the old missing keys from the truck's memory, and program the new ones. This service typically costs between $150 and $250, saving you a costly tow to the dealership.
