The 2017 GMC Yukon takes exactly 8.0 quarts (7.6 liters) of 0W-20 synthetic oil when you replace the oil filter. Whether you are dealing with a standard SLE/SLT or the luxurious Denali trim, the procedure and capacities are uniform across the V8 lineup for this model year.

As an ASE-certified master technician, I’ve performed countless oil services on the GM K2XX platform. Proper lubrication is absolutely vital for these engines, specifically to maintain the variable valve timing (VVT) and Active Fuel Management (AFM) systems. Here is everything you need to know to complete an oil change on your 2017 Yukon correctly.

    Quick answer

    • Oil Capacity: 8.0 quarts (7.6 L) with filter
    • Recommended Weight: 0W-20 Full Synthetic
    • Oil Specification: GM dexos1™ Gen 2 or Gen 3 / API SP
    • OEM Oil Filter: ACDelco PF63E (or updated PF63)
    • Aftermarket Filters: Fram XG10575 (Ultra Synthetic), Wix WL10255, Mobil 1 M1-212A

    Capacity by engine option

For the 2017 model year, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL were offered with two different V8 engines. Fortunately, they share the exact same oil pan and filter setup.

    EngineOil Capacity (with filter)Recommended Viscosity
    5.3L V8 (EcoTec3 L83)8.0 Quarts (7.6 Liters)0W-20
    6.2L V8 (EcoTec3 L86)8.0 Quarts (7.6 Liters)0W-20

    Oil change interval

Your 2017 GMC Yukon is equipped with the GM Oil Life System (OLS), which calculates oil degradation based on engine temperature, RPMs, and driving habits. However, I always recommend strict mileage caps.

    • Normal Duty: Follow the Oil Life System, but do not exceed 7,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.
    • Severe Duty (Towing, idling, short trips, dusty roads): Change every 5,000 miles or when the OLS hits 20%, whichever comes first. Given the AFM lifters in these engines, keeping the oil fresh is the best preventative maintenance you can do.

    Drain plug torque

    • Torque Spec: 18 lb-ft (25 Nm)
    • Socket Size: 15mm
    • Crush Washer: The factory drain plug features an integrated rubber O-ring seal. Inspect this seal during every change. If it is flattened, cracked, or leaking, you must replace the entire drain plug. Do not add a crush washer to a plug with a rubber seal.

    How to change the oil

    1. Warm up the engine: Run the vehicle for 5 minutes to warm the oil, allowing it to drain faster and carry away suspended contaminants.
    2. Lift and support: Safely raise the front end using a jack and heavy-duty jack stands, or drive onto ramps.
    3. Drain the oil: Locate the 15mm drain plug on the rearward side of the oil pan. Position a large drain pan (at least 10-quart capacity) and remove the plug. Let it drain completely.
    4. Replace the filter: Move to the oil filter, located just ahead of the oil pan. Use a filter wrench to remove it. Lubricate the rubber gasket on your new ACDelco PF63E (or equivalent) with fresh oil, and install it hand-tight (about 3/4 turn after the gasket makes contact).
    5. Reinstall drain plug: Torque the drain plug to 18 lb-ft. Wipe away any residual oil.
    6. Refill: Add exactly 8.0 quarts of dexos1-approved 0W-20 oil through the filler cap on the top of the engine.
    7. Check and Reset: Start the engine and let it run for a minute to build oil pressure. Check underneath for leaks. Turn off the engine, wait five minutes, and verify the oil level on the dipstick. Finally, reset the Oil Life System via the steering wheel controls and dashboard display.

    Common issues / tips

    • AFM Lifter Failures: The 5.3L and 6.2L EcoTec3 engines use Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation). The specialized lifters that make this work are highly dependent on clean oil. Dirty oil can clog the tiny screens feeding these lifters, leading to a catastrophic collapse and a costly camshaft replacement. Stick to a 5,000-mile interval if you want to play it safe.
    • Oil Cooler Lines: If you have the max trailering package, inspect the oil cooler lines near the radiator and oil block for weeping. These are known to seep oil around 60,000–80,000 miles.
    • Use the Right Filter: Always use the longer PF63E (or exact cross-referenced) filter. Older generations used the shorter PF48, but the PF63 features a different internal bypass valve pressure rating required for the EcoTec3 oil pump design.
