As an ASE-certified master technician, I can tell you that the 2019 GMC Yukon—whether you have the standard 5.3L V8 or the Denali-trim 6.2L V8—is a robust, highly capable SUV. However, keeping this heavy-duty family hauler on the road past the 200,000-mile mark requires strict adherence to General Motors’ factory fluid specifications. Using the wrong transmission fluid in the new 10-speed or mixing coolants can lead to catastrophic and expensive failures.

Below is your definitive, factory-spec fluid guide for the 2019 GMC Yukon.

    Quick reference

Note: Always verify specific capacities in your owner's manual / OEM service info, as heavy-duty cooling packages or specific tow packages can slightly alter fluid volumes.

    Engine Oil

Both the 5.3L L83 V8 and the 6.2L L86 V8 engines in the 2019 GMC Yukon require 0W-20 Full Synthetic oil that meets the GM dexos1™ Gen 2 or Gen 3 specification (API SP is the current equivalent).

Intervals & Pitfalls: These direct-injected engines are notorious for being hard on oil. The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system and Active Fuel Management (AFM/DFM) lifters rely heavily on clean, correct-viscosity oil to operate properly. Neglecting oil changes or using non-dexos approved oil can cause the AFM lifters to collapse, leading to an incredibly expensive top-end engine rebuild. While the Oil Life Monitor (OLM) might stretch changes out to 7,500 miles, many master techs recommend a stricter 5,000-mile interval to protect the lifters. Capacity is exactly 8.0 quarts with a filter change.

    Engine Coolant

The 2019 Yukon requires DEX-COOL® (Orange) coolant, which is an Organic Acid Technology (OAT) antifreeze.

Intervals & Pitfalls: The factory interval for DEX-COOL is 5 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Never mix OAT coolant (DEX-COOL) with older green IAT coolants or universal HOAT coolants. Mixing fluid types can cause the chemicals to react and form a thick, sludgy gel that will clog your heater core, radiator, and engine water jackets. Always mix concentrated DEX-COOL 50/50 with distilled water, or buy pre-diluted 50/50 mix.

    Automatic Transmission Fluid

The 2019 Yukon has two completely different transmission options, and getting this wrong is a recipe for disaster:

    • 6-Speed (6L80) on 5.3L models: Uses DEXRON®-VI.
    • 10-Speed (10L80) on 6.2L Denali models: Uses DEXRON® ULV (Ultra Low Viscosity).

Intervals & Pitfalls: DEXRON-VI and DEXRON ULV are not interchangeable. DEXRON ULV is significantly thinner to improve fuel economy and shift performance in the tightly packed 10-speed unit. Putting older Dexron in a 10-speed will cause erratic shifting and eventual clutch failure. Never use a "universal ATF" in these modern transmissions. Drop the pan and change the filter every 45,000 to 60,000 miles, especially if you use your Yukon for towing.

    Transfer Case (4WD Models)

For four-wheel-drive Yukons, the active transfer case requires GM AutoTrak® II fluid (distinctive blue color).

Intervals & Pitfalls: AutoTrak II has specific friction modifiers designed for the active clutch packs inside GM's transfer cases. Using standard ATF or gear oil will cause the transfer case to shudder, bind, or slip when four-wheel drive is engaged. The fluid should be changed every 45,000 miles under normal use, or more frequently if submerged in water or off-roaded heavily.

    Front & Rear Differentials

    • Front Differential (4WD only): Requires 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lubricant.
    • Rear Differential: Requires 75W-85 Synthetic Gear Lubricant (GM Part No. 19300457). 75W-90 synthetic is heavily substituted in the aftermarket and is generally acceptable.

Intervals & Pitfalls: GM's rear axles in this generation use a G80 mechanical locking differential (Gov-Lock). Do not add limited-slip friction modifier additives to the rear differential. The G80 relies on a specific friction coefficient to engage its flyweight mechanism; adding friction modifiers will prevent the differential from locking up when you need traction. Service the differentials every 45,000 to 60,000 miles.

    Brake Fluid

The brake system calls for DOT 3 Hydraulic Brake Fluid (GM Part No. 19353126 or equivalent).

Intervals & Pitfalls: Brake fluid is highly hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere over time. This lowers the boiling point of the fluid, leading to a spongy pedal and decreased stopping power—a critical safety issue on a 5,500+ lb SUV. Flush the brake fluid every 2 to 3 years. While DOT 4 can safely be used (it has a higher boiling point), never use DOT 5, which is silicone-based and will destroy the ABS module seals.

    Power Steering

The 2019 GMC Yukon features Electric Power Steering (EPS). There is no power steering fluid to check, top off, or replace.

    Washer Fluid

Use any high-quality windshield washer fluid. If you live in a cold climate, ensure you are using a winter-grade fluid rated for well below freezing (usually -20°F or lower). Summer bug-wash fluids will freeze in the reservoir, potentially cracking the plastic tank and bursting the washer lines.

Proper fluid maintenance is the absolute best insurance policy for your 2019 GMC Yukon. If you don't have the time, tools, or space to tackle these fluid flushes yourself, don't put them off. Find a trusted shop on Repairius.
