As a locksmith and ASE-certified electrical technician, I frequently get calls about the 2015 Honda CR-V. Honda offered two different key systems for this model year: a traditional remote head key (turn-to-start) for lower trims, and a proximity smart key (push-to-start) for higher trims like the EX and Touring.

Regardless of which system your CR-V has, it uses a high-security "laser-cut" key blade and an advanced immobilizer system. Here is everything you need to know about replacing and programming your 2015 Honda CR-V key fob.

    Step-by-step on-board programming

Important Note: The 2015 Honda CR-V does not support full DIY on-board programming. The vehicle's immobilizer system requires a professional OBD2 diagnostic scan tool (or dealership software) to pair the transponder chip inside the key to the vehicle's computer. Without this step, the engine will not start.

If you have the turn-to-start remote head key, you can program the lock/unlock buttons (the remote portion) yourself, but you will still need a locksmith or dealer to program the immobilizer chip.

Here is the procedure for programming the remote buttons on turn-to-start models:

    1. Gather all remotes you want to program (including original working ones).
    2. Insert a key into the ignition and turn it to the ON (II) position (do not crank the engine).
    3. Within 4 seconds, press the LOCK button on the remote you are programming.
    4. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK (0) position.
    5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 two more times (for a total of three cycles).
    6. Turn the ignition back to the ON (II) position.
    7. Within 4 seconds, press the LOCK button on the remote. The power door locks should cycle (lock and unlock) to indicate the vehicle has entered programming mode.
    8. Within 8 seconds, press the LOCK button on the first remote. The locks will cycle.
    9. Within 8 seconds, press the LOCK button on any additional remotes. The locks will cycle each time.
    10. Turn the ignition to the LOCK (0) position and remove the key to exit programming mode. Test the remotes.

If you have a push-to-start model, this sequence will not work. A scan tool is required for all functions.

    Battery replacement

If your range is decreasing or you get a "Key Battery Low" warning, it’s time to swap out the CR2032 battery.

    1. Smart Key: Slide the release latch on the back to remove the emergency physical key blade. Remote Head Key: Remove the small jeweler's Philips screw on the back.
    2. Insert a flathead screwdriver or a coin into the notch provided.
    3. Gently pry the two halves of the fob casing apart.
    4. Remove the old battery, taking note of its orientation.
    5. Insert a fresh CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
    6. Snap the two halves back together, reinstall the screw or emergency key, and test the fob.

Where to buy a replacement fob

When replacing your 2015 Honda CR-V key, you have three primary options:

    • Amazon / Online Retailers:
      • Pros: Very cheap (often $20–$40 for an aftermarket fob).
      • Cons: Quality control can be spotty. You still have to pay someone to cut the blade and program the chip, and some locksmiths refuse to guarantee customer-supplied parts.
    • Mobile Automotive Locksmith:
      • Pros: They come to your driveway, provide the key, cut it, and program it all at once. Generally cheaper than the dealer.
      • Cons: Call-out fees can apply depending on your distance. Expect to pay $120–$200 total.
    • Honda Dealership:
      • Pros: Guaranteed OEM parts and correct programming.
      • Cons: Most expensive route. You must tow the car there if you've lost all keys. Expect to pay $200–$300+ for parts and labor.

    If on-board programming isn't supported

Because the 2015 CR-V utilizes an encrypted ID47 transponder chip (or high-security G-chip for turn-keys), you are heavily reliant on professional equipment. If you lose all your keys, a locksmith will have to use a special laser key cutting machine to decode your door lock cylinder to make a new mechanical blade, and then plug an immobilizer programmer into your OBD2 port to bypass the factory security.

To save money, consider buying a highly-rated aftermarket key online, then calling a local auto locksmith to perform the cutting and programming. Expect a cutting and programming labor charge of around $75 to $125.
