Welcome to Repairius.com. As an ASE-certified electrical technician and professional automotive locksmith, I frequently get asked how to replace and program key fobs for modern Toyota sedans. The 2020 Toyota Camry is a fantastic vehicle, but its advanced security features mean that key fob replacement isn't quite as simple as it used to be.

Whether your Camry is equipped with a standard turn-key ignition (H-chip transponder) or the Smart Key Push-to-Start system, this guide covers everything you need to know about getting a new fob cut and programmed.

    Step-by-step on-board programming

If you are hoping to do a pedal-dance or ignition-cycling sequence to program a new remote for your 2020 Toyota Camry, I have some unfortunate news: the 2020 Toyota Camry does not support DIY on-board programming.

Toyota phased out on-board manual programming for the Camry several generations ago to improve vehicle security and prevent theft. The vehicle's Immobilizer and Smart Key systems require electronic authorization.

To program a new key, a technician must connect a specialized diagnostic scan tool (such as Toyota’s factory Techstream software, an Autel IM608, or an Advanced Diagnostics Smart Pro) to the vehicle's OBD-II port. The technician must communicate directly with the Smart Key ECU or Immobilizer module to register the new fob's unique digital signature. Attempting to bypass this system without the proper equipment is impossible.

    Battery replacement

While you cannot program the fob yourself, replacing a dead battery is a simple DIY task that takes less than five minutes. The 2020 Camry uses a standard CR2032 lithium coin battery.

    1. Remove the emergency key: Press the small release button on the side or bottom of the key fob and pull out the metal emergency key blade.
    2. Open the fob casing: Use the tip of the emergency key blade (or a small flathead screwdriver) and insert it into the slot left empty by the key blade. Twist gently to pry the two halves of the plastic shell apart.
    3. Remove the circuit board: Carefully lift the electronic circuit board out of the housing to access the battery on the back.
    4. Replace the battery: Note the orientation of the old battery (the positive "+" side usually faces up). Remove the old CR2032 battery and pop the new one into place.
    5. Reassemble the fob: Snap the circuit board and plastic halves back together securely. Reinsert the emergency metal key blade. Test the buttons to ensure proper operation.

Where to buy a replacement fob

When you need a new fob, you have three primary avenues, each with its own pros and cons:

    • The Dealership:
      • Pros: Guaranteed OEM part, guaranteed to work, handled entirely by the service department.
      • Cons: The most expensive route. Expect to pay between $250 and $450 for the fob, cutting, and programming labor.
    • An Automotive Locksmith:
      • Pros: Usually much cheaper than the dealer (expect $150 to $300 total). Mobile locksmiths can even come directly to your driveway, saving you a tow if you have lost all your keys. They can supply high-quality aftermarket or OEM fobs.
      • Cons: You must ensure they have modern programming tools capable of handling Toyota's latest rolling-code security.
    • Online (Amazon/eBay):
      • Pros: You can find aftermarket fobs for as little as $30 to $80.
      • Cons: You are buying a highly sensitive electronic component sight-unseen. Many locksmiths will refuse to program customer-supplied keys because if the cheap chip fails during programming, it can cause issues. You will still need to pay a professional for cutting and programming labor.

    If on-board programming isn't supported

Because on-board programming isn't supported on the 2020 Camry, you are dealing with Toyota's advanced 8A (H-chip) immobilizer transponder system. The immobilizer system verifies the chip inside the fob before enabling the fuel injectors and starter.

If you are down to just one working key, I highly advise getting a spare made immediately. Cloning or adding a key when you already have one working master key takes a locksmith about 15 minutes. However, if you lose all your keys, the process becomes an "All Keys Lost" situation. This requires resetting the immobilizer module entirely or using a special factory seed-code to bypass the security system, which can easily double the cost of the locksmith's services.

Save yourself the headache and expense by keeping a programmed spare safe at home.
