Whether you have the standard flip key for turn-to-start models or the proximity smart key for push-to-start (PEPS) models, losing a key or dealing with a dead fob can be frustrating.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the 2019 Ford Escape key fob, from battery replacement to programming.

    Step-by-step on-board programming

Ford is one of the few manufacturers that still allows on-board programming for their modern vehicles, but there is a major catch: You must already have TWO original, working keys to program a third key yourself. If you only have one working key, or have lost all your keys, DIY on-board programming is blocked by the vehicle's immobilizer system. You will need a diagnostic scan tool (dealer or locksmith) to add a key.

If you do have two working keys and want to add a third, follow these steps:

    For Push-to-Start (Smart Key) Models:

    1. Enter the vehicle with both programmed smart keys and the new, unprogrammed smart key. Close all doors.
    2. Place the first programmed key in the backup slot. (In the 2019 Escape, this is usually located in the center console under the cup holder mat or in the steering column).
    3. Press the START/STOP button (without pressing the brake pedal) to turn the ignition ON. Wait five seconds, then press START/STOP again to turn the ignition OFF.
    4. Remove the first key and insert the second programmed key into the backup slot.
    5. Press the START/STOP button (without the brake) to turn the ignition ON. Wait five seconds, then press START/STOP again to turn it OFF.
    6. Remove the second key and immediately place the new, unprogrammed key into the backup slot.
    7. Press the START/STOP button (without the brake) to turn the ignition ON.
    8. Keep the new key in the slot for about 5 seconds. The doors will lock and unlock, indicating the new key has been successfully programmed.

    For Turn-to-Start (Flip Key) Models:

    1. Insert the first programmed key into the ignition and turn it from OFF to ON (do not start the engine). Leave it on for at least 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds. Turn it OFF and remove the key.
    2. Within 10 seconds, insert the second programmed key, turn it to ON for 3 to 10 seconds, then turn it OFF and remove it.
    3. Within 10 seconds, insert the new, unprogrammed key (which must already have the blade cut to turn the lock) and turn it to ON.
    4. Leave it in the ON position for about 6 seconds. The door locks will cycle to confirm successful programming.

    Battery replacement

If your fob's range is getting weak, you likely just need a new battery. Both the smart key and the flip key use a single CR2032 battery.

    1. Remove the emergency key blade. (For flip keys, open the blade).
    2. Pry the case open. Look for a small notch inside the channel where the blade was resting. Use a small flathead screwdriver or a coin to gently pry the two halves of the plastic shell apart.
    3. Remove the old battery. Note the orientation (usually the positive "+" side faces up or towards the back cover).
    4. Install the new CR2032 battery. Avoid touching the flat metal faces of the battery with your bare fingers, as skin oils can reduce battery life.
    5. Snap the shell back together firmly until the seams are tight.

Where to buy a replacement fob

When getting a new fob, you have three main avenues:

    • The Dealership: The most expensive, but highly reliable. Expect to pay $150-$250 for the part, plus $100-$150 for cutting and programming. Total cost is often $300+.
    • Automotive Locksmith: Usually the best middle-ground. A mobile locksmith can supply an OEM or high-quality aftermarket fob, cut the blade on-site, and program it. Cost is typically $150-$225 total.
    • Online (Amazon/eBay): You can buy a cheap aftermarket fob for $20-$50. Pros: Very cheap. Cons: You still have to pay a locksmith to cut and program it. Many cheap fobs have unreliable transponder chips that fail programming, which means you pay the locksmith's labor fee even if the key doesn't work. If you buy online, try to buy a refurbished OEM fob or a reputable aftermarket brand like ILCO.

    If on-board programming isn't supported

If you only have one key or no keys at all, the DIY steps above will not work. The 2019 Ford Escape uses an advanced immobilizer system to prevent theft. To bypass the two-key requirement, a technician must connect a specialized OBD2 scan tool (like an Autel IM608 or Ford's IDS software) to the vehicle's diagnostic port.

The tool communicates with the Body Control Module (BCM), clears the security wait time, and forces the car to accept a new transponder chip. Most automotive locksmiths charge between $75 and $150 for this programming service, depending on your location and whether they have to drive to you.

Don't wait until you lose your only key—adding a spare when you have one key is much cheaper than originating a brand-new key when all are lost.
