As an ASE-certified electrical technician and automotive locksmith, I’ve worked on hundreds of Ford PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) and smart key setups. The 2019 Ford Explorer is a fantastic SUV, but losing a key fob can quickly become a stressful and expensive ordeal.

If you're looking to add a spare fob to your 2019 Ford Explorer, here is everything you need to know about the OEM remotes, replacement costs, and how to program a new key fob yourself.

    Step-by-step on-board programming

Ford is one of the few automakers that still allows owners to program their own smart keys on-board without diagnostic equipment. However, you must already have two unique, currently programmed working keys. If you only have one working key (or zero), you cannot use this method.

Here is the procedure to program a third smart key for a 2019 Ford Explorer:

    1. Locate the backup slot: Open the center console storage bin. Remove the rubber mat at the bottom. You will see a slot shaped specifically for the smart key.
    2. Insert Key 1: Place your first working key into the backup slot, with the buttons facing up and the top of the fob pointing toward the front of the vehicle.
    3. Turn Ignition ON: Press the engine START/STOP button once without pressing the brake pedal. Wait 3 to 5 seconds.
    4. Turn Ignition OFF: Press the START/STOP button again to turn the ignition off. Remove the first key.
    5. Insert Key 2: Within 10 seconds, place your second working key into the backup slot.
    6. Turn Ignition ON: Press the START/STOP button once (foot off the brake). Wait 3 to 5 seconds.
    7. Turn Ignition OFF: Press the START/STOP button again to turn the ignition off. Remove the second key.
    8. Insert the NEW Key: Within 10 seconds, place the unprogrammed new key into the backup slot.
    9. Program the NEW Key: Press the START/STOP button once (foot off the brake). The vehicle’s dashboard should display a message confirming the key has been programmed, and the door locks may cycle.
    10. Test the key: Remove the new key, step on the brake pedal, and press the START/STOP button to ensure it starts the engine. Test the lock, unlock, and remote start buttons.

Note: You will still need to take the blank emergency insert blade to a locksmith to be laser cut.

    Battery replacement

If your 2019 Explorer is displaying a "Key Battery Low" warning, replacing the battery is a quick, one-minute job:

    1. Press the small release latch on the back or bottom of the smart key to remove the emergency metal blade.
    2. Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the gap where the metal blade was housed.
    3. Gently twist the screwdriver to pry the two halves of the plastic key fob shell apart.
    4. Remove the old battery and insert a fresh CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
    5. Snap the two halves of the fob shell back together firmly. Reinsert the emergency blade.

Where to buy a replacement fob

The Dealership: This is the most reliable option but also the most expensive. Buying an OEM 164-R8130 smart key and having the dealer program it will typically run you between $250 and $400.

Automotive Locksmith: A mobile locksmith can source an OEM or high-quality aftermarket fob (like Strattec) and program it in your driveway. Expect to pay around $150 to $250 total. They will also laser cut the emergency blade on-site.

Amazon/eBay: You can find generic aftermarket fobs online for $30 to $50. Pros: Very cheap. Cons: The failure rate on ultra-cheap electronics is high, and many locksmiths will not guarantee successful programming if you supply your own internet key.

    If on-board programming isn't supported

As mentioned above, if you have lost all your keys, or you only have one working key remaining, the DIY on-board programming method will not work. The 2019 Ford Explorer uses an advanced Hitag Pro (ID49) transponder immobilizer system.

To add a second key or generate new keys when all are lost, a technician must connect a specialized OBD2 scan tool (like an Autel IM608 or SmartPro) to your vehicle to communicate directly with the Body Control Module (BCM) and bypass the security gateway.

If you are in this situation, do not tow your car to the dealer. A mobile automotive locksmith can come directly to your location, cut the emergency blade, and program the transponder to your vehicle on the spot.
